    ASpell is an open source spell checker.  It is distributed under the LGPL
which means that commercial applications *can* link to it.  It is a very nice
spell check engine.  If it isn't ported to windows, they could do that,
provided they release their modifications to make it work.  Then link to it
and use the existing spell checking display.  They get a much better spell
checker, contribute to open source, but in the process save themselves TONS
of time because, IMHO, porting Aspell would take less time than for them to
come up with a comparable product on their own.  Finally, they save even more
time because when aspell gets improved (including the dictionary files!) they
can incorporate that into their product.

    AFAIK, that is legal although one might want to check with, say, ESR, to
make sure.
