Oh. It's easier than you think. Consider
http://gateway.digitaria.com/users/chris/php3domo/ - there's a PHP3
script there which does a full SMTP send. The socket parts were the
easiest - most programming languages are remarkably civilized these days.
In Perl, it'd be very easy - there's a wonderful amount of CPAN code for
network related functions. More importantly, there's also several
complete mail sending packages, so you don't need to do much at all any
more.

(These kids have it so easy. Back when I was doing this... <g>)
