It is pretty much an American corporate standard that
profit is meant to be what is left after *all* expenses
are paid, including research, development, production,
marketing, support, facility expenses, departmental
budgets, the CEO's salary (pro rated), ... the works,
everything. So if OS2 is earning a profit for IBM then
it is absolutely paying its own way and corporations
seldom (ie, never) discontinue profitable products.
But, they may sell them ... .
