>And I feel the opposite ... that HTML/RTF brings the benefit of
>"visually" conveying a message that just can't be done with TEXT ...

I beg to differ.

For more than 99% of all written communication I encounter the above
statement simply isn't true.

>To me, I liken it to when WordStar/WordPerfect ruled the word processing
>world ... people complained that it was stupid and wasteful to have
>full WYSIWYG capability in a word processer ...

...as you might remember at that time the processing power involved
in comparison to that available on desktop machines was an issue.

>that what was important was the writing and not the way it was visually
>presented on the display ...

Well, from a typesetters perspective this statement is still true.

In other words:
the (simple) concept of stylesheets is *way* too complex for most
users of todays wordprocessors. This results is poorly structured
(but somewhat flashy - note I'm not saying well) formatted documents.

No, thank you. Been there, seen it, don't want it.

(anyone disagreeing on the superiority of TeX et al ? :-)

>Well ... we all know how things ended up in that market segment ...
>visual GUI based WP is the defacto standard ...

If I'm not mistaken this isn't exactly the first time in computer
history that an inferior concept 'won' by majority.

>I don't understand why we can't just have HTML/RTF as a selectable
>option ... if you don't want it, just turn if off ...

And here we are in agreement.

>When I go from PMMail on Windows 2000 with all its features ... color
>options, true hyperlinks, etc, to PMMail on OS2 where everything is
>just flat, and straight forward TEXT ... I find the OS2 version to be
>just a little "boring" ... I know I'll get flamed for saying that but
>oh well ... it's all just IMO ...

You don't get flamed - you are entitled to your own opinion and we
all err from time to time ;-)

I personally would love to be able to disable HTML/RTF/whatever rendering
in the preview pane.

>Besides, I think it's a done deal for PMMail ... BSW wants to remain
>competitive ... And that means a certain amount of HTML/RTF support ...
>without it PMMail will just fade away ...

Sad as it is I think your assessment is correct.

>The one thing I believe we all can agree on is that we don't want to
>see that happen ...

:-)

Whatever direction the display engine will go:
!!! make it optional !!!

Best,
Michael
