Or some combination of these:

So why not have the "quote reply" function be user-selectable, so that
the highlighted text in the original msg is automatically set out in
the reply as the user wishes.  My choice, btw, would be this:

>from the original message which you think indespensable

Apologies if this has been suggested before.  I'm new to the list and
haven't been here for the whole discussion.
