Actually, I could have been a bit more clear (but I just now figured out what's happening):

"FW:" as a prefix gets sorted with the "F's" and "Fw:" gets sorted properly by the rest of the subject line. IOW, PMMail isn't recognizing the (probably non-compliant) "FW:" prefix properly.
 
The intervening messages were alpha-sorted correctly.
