In cases where the recipient is expecting something of this nature, or
has solicited mail of this format, that's fine. One to one the
additional bandwidth is only multiplied by a factor of 1, and the
formatted document is likely to be important to both sender and
receiver.

In some cases it does, I would happily receive a formatted document in
OpenOffice format for instance (or MS Word for the OS challenged).
However I would not expect that such a document would be encoded or
tagged and included inline, it should be sent as an attachment.

All your arguments are correct in situations where people are tolerant
of such formats or practices, however I think you ought to know (in fact
I'm sure you do) that I was referring to USENET and mailing lists where
the group or list charter states that only plain ascii text is to be
used.

But I think we've moved on a bit from edlin.... ;-)
