Just as a clarification since I use Verizon for DSL ...
(and I know your answer was meant as an example)

Outgoing mail used to be: smtpout.verizon.net

But they have changed it recently to: outgoing.verizon.net
Inversely the POP setting is: incoming.verizon.net
