Yes and no.  Practically anything you need to do can be implemented 
either with a Javascript quickie or with a Thunderbird extension, 
however, the entry barrier is high.

Thunderbird is part of the Mozilla platform, which is really an 
application foundation, not just a fancy browser.  The foundation 
happens to support browsing, e-mail, web page composition, and a bunch 
of other stuff, all with a common base.  There is a certain "Mozilla 
machismo" to get through, but once you see the light and understand the 
philosophy, there is a great deal you can do to tweak the UI and the 
message handling.

Unfortunately, I have not broken through the "Mozilla machismo" yet, so 
I'm still just hacking around.
