some mail servers break down the connection during the data phase
if the message starts to look spammy e.g. no subject, illegal
subject, obscene language (the 7 naughty words)

Sorry, can't tell. My stunnel.conf for GMail was this one:

client = yes

[gmailpop]
accept = 127.0.0.1:123
connect = pop.gmail.com:995

[gmailsmtp]
accept = 127.0.0.1:124
connect = smtp.gmail.com:465
=========================================================

Out of the blue: you might try "Send after fetch".
