First off - STOP using the drive, if at all possible.  No writes!!

Second - check the Recycle Bin?  It holds a maximum of 1500 files or so, 
so that might not contain everything - my PMMail folders have over 
350,000 messages in them, dating back a decade.

Third - yes, probably a recovery effort...  I can recommend Handy 
Recovery - it works well, and it relatively affordable - also works on 
CF and SD memory cards.
