Text wrapping?

Actually, it is not. Because now when the person replies with quotes the
quote marker is on the beginning of the line and you get the alternating line
problem you describe below. A whole paragraph with one quote marker at the
top.

Convention is 72-78 characters at the time of sending. If they have a
window smaller than this, their problem. If it is larger, well, then they
get some extra space. But the 72-78 character range has been around for at
least a decade or so.
