  Or much longer - an IBM punchcard has 80 characters, always has had.
  The continuation column is 72, data columns there 1 to 71. 73 to 80
  is often used for sequence-numbering.

  There is most probably no DIRECT relation, but after all we had 80
  characters on screens for longer than I can remember.
