PMMail keeps crashing. Very frustrating. Any advice?

Why not try installing to a *new* location, copying your accounts and
address books over, and using the new installation for a while. That
way you can see if things sort themselves out and if they don't you
still have your original installation untouched (for whatever that is
worth).
