Today it it started to work using the hostname as well as with the IP address! I'd changed
nothing - just put the hostname back to check a suggestion that the differences between PMmail
and Outlook Express might have been due to operating in different sessions.
However I think the following, which I found on the status page of the LineOne, might be a
partial explanation :
===========================
Due to the recent hardware problems causing logging in problems, the Lineone service will be
unavailable between 8.00am - 9.00am today whilst engineers are on site to rectify the problem.
Your connection to the internet,if already established, will not be affected. Thank you for your
patience and accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience experienced. As always, we
appreciate and welcome your feedback. Please email feedback@lineone.net with your
comments.

The mystery that remains is why , during the period that they were having hardware problems, I
was able to log in via Outlook Express.
This may well remain one of life's great mysteries - unless anyone knows differently?
Thanks again to everybody who responded to my request for help,
David
