Precisely because the SOM and object orientation work so well, people don't need to know - they do what they need to 
do to get tehir work done.

Put an object on the desktop (eg save an attachment), shadow it then move it to another folder/drive and the shadow 
is automatically updated. THAT'S object orientation - let's you work without worrying about the details... 

Nobody has to worry about a) the SEQUENCE of steps required or b) updating the .LNK file to reflect the fact that 
they moved the original. Thus object orientation makes the concept of a shadow (separate from the concept of a copy) 
real, useful and productive, and the term "shadow" is sufficiently analogous to real life that it is picked up 
intuitively.
