Archiving mail

Does anyone have a recommended method for archiving old mail in such a way 
that the folder structure, etc. is preserved and mail can easily be 
retrieved if necessary?

I'd like to move some of my older stuff to backup disks, but I still wind 
up referring to it often enough to want to make it easy.
