Almost certainly, in using every OS/2 release since the first I've 
never had such a problem.

I've never had this problem either. The only problem I've ever had
like this was related to a failing sector(s) on a hard drive which
caused me to lose some old messages and then the partition information. 
Gammatech's Patrition fixup and a chkdsk with the /F:3 option fixed that 
long enough to bring in a new drive and transfer data across.
