Well, it depends on the size of your screen.  For me, I can generally
see the entire message in the preview pane, and rarely need to open the
message window unless the message has attachments.  My screen is at a
resolution of 1280x1024, and I prefer the preview pane for most of my
reading.

On another note, so far I've never received one of those bad HTML
message.  Possibly because all of my mail is filtered by spamcop.net
_before_ it gets to my desktop.  I used to get between 10 -15 spam a
day to my system, now I'm unlucky if I get one a week.
