By design. A single field in the <folder.bag> file is used for message
status. When you - mark and Alt+R  a message - you force this status field
to \read\ instead of \replied/forwarded\. Alt+U will force this status
field to \unread\ instead of \replied/forwarded\. There is no provision in
the RMB menu to force the message status to \replied/forwarded\. You can:
a). Manually edit the first field of the <folder.bag> file. 0=unread
1=read 2=replied/forwarded 3=sent 4=draft 5->9=unused(?) 10=unread high
pri 11=read high pri

or

b) Use a manual filter to change the status.
===Filter h.From="@"
===Action Set status =====> read, unread, or replied/forwarded.
RMB on message to change, apply manual filters, select filter created.
