It's not only polarbar. AKMail e.g. included these features
since years. There is also a mechanism, which checks the outgoing
message for specific keywords and then select (if you want) 
automatically the matching signature. (This is very useful
for signatures in foreign languages or e.g. a private signatures,
which is used when keywords like "Hugs" and so on are in the
message). It's also possible, to use one addressbook for the
whole LAN.

The only handicap of this email-client is a very strange license,
and that the tool doesn't seem to be developed any more.
