Because they are a *company*, accepting peoples' monies in exchange
for products. *Companies* will make every effort to listen to customers,
respond to them, ... if even to only say "we have received your email and
will answer it later"

You are correct, but you're confusing "developers" with the company itself.
I will agree that developers should not be answering email. I will never
agree that a COMPANY shouldn't answer email, never. Note that I'm not
saying that the email should be answered instantly (the original writer said
it had been unanswered for a couple days), but it should be answered. Not
answering it is akin to not returning a business phone call, which is also a
no-no.
I am a SOHO software developer, and work by myself. The "developer"
shouldn't be bothered, but for a company to ignore either current or
potential customers, as you advocate, is a poor business practice which will
lead to corporate failure.
