I believe they just read the documentation and found a byte with no
claim staked on it.

Well they don't have to choose a GPLed client.
For that matter I'd rather they did the port. The really picky protocol
stuff is already done and that leaves 2 issues: The filesystem and the
gui.
But I'd live for a while with windows code compiled to whatever that
win-API thing for Linux is.
