PMMail does not automatically run any application, regardless of if
the "preview" pane is on or off. The preview pane simple displays the
text content of the email.
The problem with email viruses arises when people execute or run the
attached programs or scripts. As noted, this can happen by accident
or ignorance, even with PMMail so filters that detect viruses are a
good idea, as is anti-virus software.
But no, PMMail will not automatically infect your system the way some
other email programs might.
