I use another approach. I have a local Stunnel daemon (www.stunnel.org)
running all the time and that takes a plain connection on one port and
forwards it transparently to the SSL Port of your Mailserver if that
supports SSL, if that doesn't, you can run another Stunnel daemon there to
do the reverse. It is quite usefull and encrypts the whole traffice
wonderfully.
