Thanks for your replies John and Stephen, it's nice to know your not alone with the problem, no one had mentioned it for some time.

As John said, It can take quite some time to shut running applications when this occurs, but out of frustration I had to do it.

I have now removed Zone Alarm and trying Kerio PF. Recommendations to me were Kerio, BlackIce and Sygate as alternatives to ZA.
