For one, PMMail/2 does support SMTP authentification, just not all
possible methods (see Account settings, SEND page). I do use it with
GMX which requires SMTP authentification.
Another workaround would be to use an intermediary for submitting
SMTP. I don't know if e.g. Weasel would do it, or maybe a port of
BLAT (www.blat.net or http://www.interlog.com/~tcharron/blat.html) to
OS/2. Or even a simple REXX script for SendMail. RxWeb by Igor Pool
might be a solution, too. InternetPowerServer/2 might be another
candidate.
I remind you, that PMMail allows to substitute its own SMTP client
by other means for each account individually (see Account settings,
REXX page).
OTOH, if it really becomes a problem, I think that BSW would make
it possible to port just that enhancement to the OS/2 version.
