When viewing a message with both a plain text and an html component with the
new flag set to display the plain text : Alt-X transfers only the plain-text to the
external editor - this prevents you  from viewing in a browser if you so desire.
Changing the flag shows the html portion and transfers it to the external editor
but this seems to defeat the functionality of the new flag.

A seemingly logical fix would be to either transfer the entire message (or just
all of the content) to the external editor - OR show the html content as an
attachment - then it would open in the browser from right-click->open.
