Web-based e-mail allows the provider to sell advertising and make a
little money. There's no way to sell advertising to a POP3 user, so
there's no reason to give away POP3 accounts.
Yahoo does offers a reasonable alternative. For $35/year,
domains.yahoo.com will register your domain name and give you a simple
Web page, one POP3 e-mail account, and unlimited forwarding records.
You can buy another 5 POP3 accounts for $5/month.
Generally, the Internet Service Provider that connects you to the
Internet provides you with a POP3 account. Maybe the original poster
can use that?
