M$ has been forced to provide updated products for two reasons:
1. To "compete." Whenever a competitor is acknowledged, M$ throws mountains of money
and effort into creating a similar product and practically giving it away until the
competition starves. Then development stops.
This is a method of last resort, after slander, FUD, and other PR efforts. M$ really
hates technical solutions.
2. To maintain a revenue stream.
The second item is becoming a unnecessary with the "software rental" scheme M$ is now
putting into place. They no longer need to update their products to keep the money
flowing.
