I used to have the same problem with my dial-up ISP. Very
annoying.
In every case, I could locate (by trial and error) the
offending email (it was always a Spam) using the PMMail
Remote function and delete it. Then all the mail would
come in successfully. My "trial and error" approach was to
open the Remote function, and then delete everything that
smelled like Spam. That almost always fixed the problem.
When it didn't, I'd download via remote small batches until
I found the batch with the offending message. Then,
invariably, it would be a Spam message that I'd missed in
the initial pass.
About 6 months ago, I switched to Earthlink cable and now
use their Spam filtering. That seems to have completely
eliminated the problem.
I don't know if it's the ISP or the Spam filtering, but I'm
guessing it's the Spam filtering, since all offending
messages in the past turned out to be spam.
Of course, it could be because, with my always on
connection, I seldom download more than a few emails at a
time, where with my dialup, if I missed a day or two, I
could have to download hundreds of messages at once ... a
sure way to have it blow up.
