A remarkable recent example is Turbopower (a Delphi components
company - www.turbopower.com) who decided to bail out of a long
successful business as free components squeezed their margins.

They announced the end of their business, the transfer of (nearly)
all their work to Sourceforge, and a refund to anyone who had bought
their products in the couple of months before they shut up shop (and
worked with resellers to find them).
