  If the HPFS partition is greater the 4 GB, you are in trouble. The HPFS file system 
driver that is used by Windoze is old (1996?), and is reliable only for 
smaller-than-4GB partitions.
  The symptoms are typical of writing into disk areas past the 4GB mark.
