Jim and Kris:

Try this, it may help (or maybe not). I think I remember at least one
person having some luck...

You can drag and drop colors to PMMail/2's minimized status bar using
standard OS/2 methods. Open a color palette (mixed or solid should
work) and drag&drop for background colors, ctrl-drag&drop for
foreground (text) colors. Do this when the status bar isn't flashing.
If it's black text on black background, ctrl-drag pure white to it to
change the text to white.

Does this help? Does it revert when you close/restart?

Personally, I changed my status bar to a pinkish color a long time
ago (can't remember why).
