BoB was under quite a lot of pressure with various features when I
corresponded with him about this problem in the first place, I don't
know how many Demon customers badgered him about PMMail's difficulties
with Demon's setup. Once I got him to understand that the RFC clearly
stated that UID was the *only* thing about a POP3 mailbox guaranteed to
persist from one login to the next for a given message, he quite
rapidly fixed it, but I agree that there are optimisations that could
be applied. It may be that he thought that the smtp spool was searched
every time that any action was started, POP3 does preserve 'state'
while a session is continuing so your suggestion is sensible, but I
know BoB was concerned that there would be other implementations where
this could be different.

do you know how far this has gone?
just how damaged have I become?
