The word "attachment" is misleading.

A message with "attachments" is indistinguishable from a large message without 
because both are just one text file.

The MUA you use (in this case PMM) looks for the boundaries between the sections 
and shows the appropriately decoded bits to you as if they were files. They are 
not.

Get a message with attachments into your inbox and go look at it with a file 
browser and you will see what I mean.

As a result the pop3 protocol has no way to get you the message without the 
attachment(s).
