  There is RFC 3028 for server side filtering, which goes by the name of 
"SIEVE: A Mail Filtering Language" by T. Showalter [ January 2001 ]

  With SIEVE, a mail client would instruct the server to filter out messages 
according to various criteria before getting them from the server.

  I don't know, though, which and how many SMTP or POP3 server support SIEVE.
