I'll concede that support personnel deserve to know version
information, but that's a very tiny amount of email which I send; and
optional at that; with other ways of attaching the same info (though
not as filterable by support).

But I regard that as case of the tail wagging the dog.

If somebody wants to know more about the person who posted your message
to the discussion list, seeing your use of an OS/2 application will
narrow their field of research considerably, and make it much easier
for them to match you to other data records.

I don't care to support that behavior or to make it any easier.
