I won't argue with your points about abuse, but I think you are wrong
that it serves no positive purpose. Especially on this list, we often
rely on it to see what version or operating system posters are using
when they ask a question without providing sufficient detail. Even on
other (non-email client) lists, that is often useful when people post
questions about how to do things.

Do you really think anyone is targeted based on the information in
their X-Mailer line? I know the reverse is true -- I get lots of virus
and worm messages, but they don't affect me because I'm not running
Outlook.
