John's message was intended as sarcasm.  He was making fun of those who 
would throw the baby out with the bathwater.  Without SMTP and POP3, 
there is no e-mail at all (today), and he realizes this.

MAPI is just a way to get into a mail application.  The app still has to 
use SMTP to send.
