The fact that sendmail successfully handles terabytes of mail each day
in mail files in exactly the same format shows just how silly this 
concern is.  They do NOT get corrupted easily, and if they do, they 
are easy to fix by hand.  Eudora and Pegasus do exactly the same thing,
and no one would suggest that those are "small volume" mail programs.

Outlook uses an internal format that is impossible to edit by hand.  
One trashed byte renders the whole mailbox useless, and largely 
irrecoverable.  This is entirely unlike Thunderbird.

You are entitled to your personal biases, but in this case your FUD
is unwarranted.
