Most pop3 servers I am familiar with will not prompt you for
username/password: it would look like this:

Start -> Run: telnet pop.mail.com 110
Trying 192.168.1.1...
Connected to pop.mail.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
+OK
user sewing    <-- you type this whole line
+OK
pass foobar    <-- you type this whole line (password shows in
cleartext)
+OK
list    <-- you type this whole line (I don't have any mail)
+OK
.
quit    <-- you type this whole line
+OK
Connection closed by foreign host.
