Then why is the feature there? I guess it's for those that use variable 
width fonts but thats their look out.

Get you facts right Steve. There is a <cr><lf> pair before 80 characters 
on all my messages, apart from one of today showing the problem with 
reflow at send. That did contain a few lines longer than 80 charaters. 
This one should not.
