Hangs at "Getting number of messages..."

This is similar to a frequently-noted problem that was reported
Aug-Sept of last year. The thread was named "'New Mail Check' is
broken". So far as I know, it was included near the top of the
master bug list sent to Southsoft/Blueprint circa then. One
request was to simply put a watchdog on the fetch request and
resend it periodically if it's hanging. Nothing was done. I still
have the problem as apparently do others. The frequency is about
daily.
My instantiation usually hangs at the message 'Connecting to POP
Server'. My sense is that the fault lies with the server, but it
is a problem that PMMail could check for and fix. A manual fetch
usually (but not always) works.
