  Does BT allow subscribers to provide their own modems?  The US
  telcos and cable providers do.  In the long run it's less
  expensive than renting it from the Telco (which is what you are
  doing) and you get the box that you want/need without
  negotiating with less-than-knowledgeable order clerks.
