Saying that implies that HTML must necessarily mean graphics.  It
usually does not.

The bandwidth overhead to download a minimal number of extra characters
for HTML formatting is itself miniscule.  I think a better place to
start would likely be to trim the signatures (yours, mine *and* the one
for this list especially) - that would probably do more to save
bandwidth than the HTML tags.
