[pmmail-list] change mru file?

My addr.mru file seems to have a mind of its own; it sometimes adds
my most recently used email addresses, but as a rule does not.  

I know I can edit this file, removing and adding names of my choice,
but that defeats the purpose of it.  It also doesn't seem to allow
the new names to pop up when I start typing them in by hand.

Anyone know more about this that might help me use it better?
