It's hard to argue that their word processor and spreadsheet aren't pretty good.  
But the majority of their products are just "good enough" for most of their users.  
The "many areas of computing" you mention is primarily relegated to the desktop 
market.  They don't have much effect on the Internet or enterprise computing:  
as an example, Apache has more than half of the web server market, despite IIS 
being bundled with their crappy NOS.
