I've had this problem ever since upgrading to PMM2k. It doesn't
matter whether it's the full release or a beta, I get the weird
background color thing with some html messages - not all. And the
only way to read some messages it to open the full message and view
the source code. Even then, the color is there, but at least the text
is in plain black.
