this is working fine here. could it be there is also an HTML part to
the message that isn't getting changed? if so strip that part out when
you edit the message.

to get a subject line to change you have to do it a little different. 

move the message in pmm mail to a diff folder
edit the subject in the header
then move the message back using explorer or what ever you like.
reindex both folders.
